What about older MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models?

Older USB-C MacBooks use different recommended adapter wattages, so it is worth identifying the exact model before replacing a charger. Apple currently lists the following common combinations for earlier models:

If you are unsure which MacBook you own, identify the model in About This Mac or System Information before choosing a replacement charger. Matching the model matters more than relying on a broad label such as “MacBook Pro charger”.

Why can a MacBook use a charger with a different wattage?

A compatible USB PD charger and the Mac negotiate a supported power level. A higher-rated charger therefore does not simply force its maximum wattage into the laptop. If the charger has more capacity than the Mac can use, that extra capacity remains available rather than being pushed into the battery.

Apple states that a Mac that uses USB-C for charging can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery even when its wattage is higher or lower than the recommended adapter. MacBook Air: what wattage is right?

For the current M5 MacBook Air, the minimum is 30 W for the 13-inch model and 35 W for the 15-inch model. Both are fast-charge capable with a 70 W or higher USB PD power source.

That means a 65 W charger can be useful for everyday charging, but it does not meet Apple's current 70 W fast-charge threshold for the M5 Air. If fast charging is the goal, choose a compatible 70 W or higher USB PD source and an appropriate cable.

MacBook Pro: what wattage is right?

Start with the minimum wattage Apple specifies for your exact model. If you want fast charging, use the higher fast-charge threshold instead. Then decide whether you want a compact single-purpose adapter or enough total output and ports for several devices.

A compact GaN charger is useful for travel or a lightweight everyday kit, while a higher-output multi-port charger can make more sense when a MacBook shares one adapter with a phone, tablet or other accessories.
