BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 Race Day Guide: Start Times, Schedule and What to Expect

BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 Race Day Guide: Start Times, Schedule and What to Expect

02/09/2026

In the last few days before the race, one question matters more than most: what time do I start? The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON uses a wave start, so runners do not all set off together.

Your start block determines your start time and the event-site entrance time assigned to your group. The first runner wave starts at 08:45.

Knowing the schedule takes some of the stress out of the morning. Once you know your block, your event-site entrance time and what happens before the start and after the finish, race day becomes much easier to plan.

Here is the full race-day rundown: the key timings, start waves, what to expect before the start and after the finish, and a final checklist for the night before.

BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 Race Day Overview

The BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 takes place on Sunday 27 September. Runners start on Straße des 17. Juni between the Brandenburg Gate and Kleiner Stern and return to Straße des 17. Juni for the finish after 42.195 km.

The key thing to understand about race morning is the wave start. Runners are divided into start blocks that set off at different times, helping the field move onto the course in stages.

Your own start time therefore depends on the letter shown on your bib rather than one single start time for every runner. Your start block also determines the event-site entrance time assigned to you.

If you are still organising your race-day kit, our Marathon Packing List 2026 covers clothing, nutrition, race documents, tech and charging essentials.

Start Times, Waves and the Start Area

Runners start from 08:45 in six waves. Handbike and wheelchair athletes set off before the runner waves.

Group / block Start time Event-site entrance time
Handbiker Tops 08:20 Follow the relevant participant instructions
Wheelchair Elite 08:26 Follow the relevant participant instructions
Other handbike and wheelchair athletes 08:29 Follow the relevant participant instructions
Blocks A, B, C 08:45 07:00
Blocks D, E 09:05 07:30

Block H 10:02 08:30
Block J 10:12 08:30
Block K 10:27 09:00

Your start block is based on your submitted best or expected finish time and is printed on your bib. Allow enough time between entering the event site and reaching your starting area.

There are two runner entrances to the event site. Platz der Republik, directly opposite the Reichstag, is open to all runners. Bremer Weg is available only to runners with a purple bib number and a poncho symbol on the bib who are not assigned to Block K.

Once inside, follow the marked routes across the event site to your designated starting area.

Timekeeping uses the MIKA TAG attached to the back of your bib. For most runners, personal net time is recorded through the timing systems at the start and finish. Do not bend the transponder. The first 50 male and female runners are ranked by gun time.

Keep the time limits in mind too. The overall limit is 6 hours 15 minutes from crossing the start line. There is a cut-off at km 33 at 15:40, and the official finish closes at 17:00. Runners who miss the time limit or cut-off must leave the official course and are transported to the finish by the broom bus.

What to Know Before the Start

Before race day, make sure you know whether you have the clothing-bag or poncho option, understand the start-area rules and allow enough time to reach your starting block.

If you booked the clothing-drop-off option, you receive a transparent clothing bag and bib-number label with your race material. Clothes and valuables for drop-off must be packed loosely inside this official bag. Other bags cannot be placed inside it, and luggage is not allowed in the start/finish area. You collect your clothing bag again after the race and do not receive a poncho.

If you did not book a clothing bag, the event poncho is provided automatically after the finish. With this option, you cannot drop off clothes or valuables on race day or bring luggage into the start area.

You can still wear an old hoodie, training jacket or another warm layer while waiting before the start. When you no longer need it, leave it at the designated clothing-donation points, where the Berliner Stadtmission collects the items for reuse.

Prohibited items in the start/finish area include glass containers, weapons, hazardous or flammable substances, bulky objects, bicycles, animals and luggage. Check the organiser's latest full prohibited-items list before race day if you are unsure about anything you plan to bring.

Changing facilities and hot-water showers are available in the start/finish area. Once you have left the event area, however, you cannot enter it again.

Pacemakers carrying clearly visible target-time flags are listed for all runner start blocks, with target times varying by block. The organiser currently lists target times ranging from 3:00 hours to 6:00 hours, subject to change, so check the latest race-day information before the event.

Check your bib before leaving for the start. Wear it clearly visible on the front, keep the MIKA TAG on the back flat and unbent, and keep on the Athlete Wristband fitted during race-material pickup.

If you still need to collect your race material, our BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 Expo Guide covers the venue, opening hours and pickup process.

What to Expect After the Finish

After you cross the finish line on Straße des 17. Juni, you are guided through the finisher area, where you receive your medal and the available refreshments.

ERDINGER Alkoholfrei is also available for finishers behind the finish line. A comprehensive free massage service is offered after the race on a first-come, first-served basis, so availability at a particular moment is not guaranteed.

If you have the poncho option, collect your poncho from the marked distribution point after the finish. If you booked clothing drop-off instead, retrieve your clothing bag from the designated area and remember that you do not receive a poncho.

No free finisher shirt is handed out at the finish. For 2026, however, both an optional adidas Event Shirt and a separate adidas Finisher Shirt are available as paid extras. Pre-ordered products are collected at the MARATHON EXPO by BRITA with your race material.

After leaving the event site, you cannot re-enter it. Family and friends can meet you at the official Family Meeting Point in front of the Paul-Löbe-Haus, where meeting areas are organised by the first letter of your surname.

Your participation also includes public transport in fare zones A, B and C around race weekend. Follow the usage information sent with your Start Card and check your return journey before leaving the finish area.

Final Race-Day Checklist

Run through this short list the night before so the important details are already sorted when you wake up.

  • Know your start block and start time, together with the event-site entrance time assigned to your block.
  • Allow plenty of time for public transport, walking, entry checks and the route to your starting area.
  • Wear your bib clearly on the front, keep the MIKA TAG on the back flat and keep your Athlete Wristband on.
  • Plan your journey in advance and check the public-transport instructions included with your participation.
  • Agree on your meeting point at the Paul-Löbe-Haus with family or friends.
  • Check the weather forecast and, if needed, bring an old warm layer that you can donate at the designated pre-start collection points.
  • Fully charge your phone, GPS watch and other devices the night before.

Supporters can use the available tracking services if your selected tracking setting allows it. Tracking, navigation, frequent screen use, messages and photos can also increase smartphone battery use across a long race day.

A power bank can provide additional backup during the journey to the start, the pre-race wait and the hours after the finish. The UGREEN MagFlow Air Magnetic Slim Power Bank (10000mAh, Qi2 15W) supports Qi2 magnetic wireless charging for compatible devices. Compatible devices can also be charged using its USB-C charging options.

You can compare additional options in the UGREEN power bank and wireless and magnetic power bank ranges.

If you are travelling with several devices, UGREEN travel chargers can help simplify charging in your hotel, while suitable USB cables are useful for wired charging. Our Marathon Tech Essentials guide covers smartphones, watches, headphones and power in more detail.

The Wrap-Up

Race day at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 is much easier to manage once you know your start block. Check the letter on your bib, note your start time and the event-site entrance time assigned to your group, and leave enough time to reach your starting area without rushing.

Make sure you also know whether you have the clothing-bag or poncho option, keep your bib and Athlete Wristband correctly in place and agree on a meeting point with your supporters for after the race.

For your phone and other devices, preparation starts the night before. A power bank can provide additional battery backup around the journey, start and finish, while UGREEN power banks, wireless and magnetic power banks, travel chargers and USB cables offer options for different race-weekend charging needs.

UGREEN supports the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2026 as the Official Charging Partner, helping runners and visitors stay powered across marathon weekend.
