UGREEN Hard Drive Enclosure with Cooling Fan & 2 Cables

Disappointing product, appalling customer service

I purchased UGREEN’s 40Gbps NVMe enclosure, but despite being connected to an M2 Mac mini via Thunderbolt/USB4 with a Samsung 990 PRO, it would only negotiate at 10Gbps, with speeds of around 950MB/s.

I carried out all the troubleshooting requested, including updating macOS, testing both Thunderbolt ports, disconnecting other devices and trying both the supplied cable and a separate certified 40Gbps cable.

The bigger issue has been UGREEN’s customer service. I have contacted them repeatedly by email and through their website chat, provided full technical details, chased unanswered messages, requested escalation, given them a 48-hour deadline, and finally formally requested a return and refund.

Still no meaningful response and no return instructions.

Ironically, UGREEN managed to email me asking for a Trustpilot review while apparently being unable to respond to my support emails.

A faulty product can happen. Ignoring a customer repeatedly when they are simply trying to return it is unacceptable. I would not buy directly from UGREEN again.

I really like this SSD enclosure. It’s quite fast, the cooling fan is silent, and it feels solid and reliable. The price-to-performance ratio is excellent. It comes with cables of an optimal length and also includes a special rubber protective case. I installed an SSD with a 2TB storage capacity inside, and I think it should also support up to 8TB, although I haven’t tested that myself.

Bought this for my mom. Her iMac had been unusably slow and she never said a word. It had a bad SSD, and being a Mac, upgrading the whole thing is the typical next step. I bought this enclosure and a Samsung EVO, installed Mac OS on it, and set up the Mac to boot from the external SSD. The difference is night and day. Super easy to use, can be tucked behind the iMac so it''s still aesthetic. Saved my mom $1000+ on a new computer when all she uses it for is checking emails and the occasional website that doesn''t work on her iPad.

The media could not be loaded.Works well*, quiet and small.Only issue on both that I own is the included cables are not compatible with MacBook Pro. It might connect and work for a while, but when I tried to connect both, the cables started failing and they would not connect. Works great with authentic Thunderbolt cables.The cable issue is why I deducted one star. Otherwise, these are great! I took out the audio on the video due to background noise as to not give a false impression of this device’s noise. I can’t hear the fan on this at all.

Good buy but, the controller for the internal fan doesn’t cool the ssd very well. Definitely need better thermal pads inside.

This is the beast external SSD drive hub! it works flawlessly with MacOS and Windows computer, the speed is insane when connected with either, thunderbolt or USB-C. It was pretty much plug and play. I use it in my Mac Studio M2 Max for running my virtual sound libraries with no glitches. A also using this to run my virtual computers on my Windows laptop. Ugreen products are high quality, I haven''t tried one and not like it!

This enclosure is pretty nice. The fan actually moves some air which one of the main reasons I purchased it. I put a Crucial P310 in it, which aspirationally can hit 7100 MBps reads. In this enclosure I saw closer to one of the images of 3000-3500 MBps reads and 2000-2600 MBps writes.Installation was simple and the tiny screw driver needed to open it and secure the SSD was included.Performance was acceptable on both Windows 11 and Mac with windows being slightly faster.The device came with a high speed USB-C to USB-C cable that was able to hit those speeds. It performed just as well as my TB4 cables. It also came with a USB-C to USB-A cable that I did not test.With this and the SSD used for testing being Prime Day purchases and heavily discounted I am happy with the cost as well.

These are awesome!!!! Fast speed, keeps the drive cooler than ones without a fan. It feels so premium and solid! I bought two and plan to get two more.

Performance is amazing compared with the Thunderbolt 5 version, HOWEVER I was not able to screw down with my NVME WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280. I spent a frustrating 45 minutes and think the screws are too short. Fortunately I was able to use the screw from the Thunderbolt 5 version UGREEN 80Gbps M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure with Cooling Fan, Compatible with Thunderbolt 5/4/3/USB 4 M-Key/(M&B) Key 8TB NVMe 2280 SSD I also purchased. The printed instructions in the box have no value and I was not pointed to a Web Page or YouTube (advise if I am wrong about this). I did just email UGreen re: the screw issue. I am thinking enclosures WITHOUT screws are much better (as screws can also be lost).

The performance is quite good. It has good heat conducting material on both sides. Also has cooling fan. As mentioned by other customers, fan get louder on heavy use.

The enclosure works well and I am getting the advertised speed only after buying a thunderbolt 4 cable. They should have made it more clear that the cable they provide does not support thunderbolt 4. Another small gripe is that according to the instructions you just screw in the m.2 drive screw normally but this bends the drive quite a bit. You are supposed to screw in the m.2 drive about half way up the screw in the small notch in the screw. This keeps the m.2 drive level.

Bought this to expand the storage on a Mac mini and with a decent memory card it’s just as fast as the internal SSD.

Excellent. Works well with my Samsung 970 pro 1TB for heavy writing. I use as a scratch disk for large volume data analysis. Has never had a hiccup with thunderbolt 4 connection.

UGREEN makes such great products. This SSD Thunderbolt 4 enclosure is no exception. All aluminum construction with copper heat sink to help with heat dissipation. Special pad that is applied to SSD to connect it to the heat sink cover. Special screw mount to keep the card from touching the mounting base giving it room for airflow. Built in fan that is thermal controlled. Excellent data transfer rate. Great product for a fair price. I bought two for my Samsung 970 EVO drives.

2nd unit I have purchased, now used for my min hard drive and back up, so impressed with ow technology has moved on, the speed performance for large files with this enclosure are phenomanal.

I’m quite impressed. The materials are top-notch, and it feels incredibly premium in your hand—definitely not one of those flimsy enclosures you’d worry about breaking after a few uses. For day-to-day usage, it works flawlessly.That said, I did encounter a downside: the cooling performance. If you’re transferring large amounts of data in one go, the enclosure struggles to dissipate the heat generated by the SSD. While this is likely an edge-case scenario for most users, it’s worth noting if your workflow involves heavy read/write operations.For regular use, this enclosure is a fantastic choice. But if you frequently deal with large data transfers, you might want to explore other options with better cooling capabilities.

Yeah I know there's a bottleneck but I had an extra 4 TB nvme SSD after getting an 8 TB and the fact that this has a built-in fan excuse me peace of mind that there will be no he related issues as well

Tested with Seagate Fireside 530 (heatsink version, but removed) and Macbook M1 Max.
Speeds are OK - top out at 3500 write and 4000 read. Which is not exactly the theoretical 40gbps but much higher than USB3.2 v2 10gbps standard.
Sturdy but small.
Heats up to 40 Celsius on long-term operations but stays within 36-38 on average.
Cooling fan usefulness is not clear, feels like a gimmick.
Thermal pad is thin, so probably won't even touch the heatsink cover, I've used both suppliad and the one from my NVME heatsink.
